The wood wide web extends around us as we walk. Below us microscopic mycorrhiza link the roots as the plants network information and support. This subterranean fungal network and the wider ecosystem of leaves and insects and birds above us silently and not-so-silently chatter in their unhuman way. At least that’s what my dad used to say every time he dragged us all out for a walk every weekend. We used to listen, sulkily. At least now there’s decent reception and a half-decent game. I don’t mind it now, but you should hear my dad go on about the sponsors.
