I know people who call up just to be insulted. They say it makes such a nice change from algorithmic politeness and cheerfulness. To have an irascible, recalcitrant, frankly rude restaurant owner on the end of the line is a breath of fresh air. In a world where personalised politeness is baked into every call centre chatbot’s character, when you know what you’re going to get with every interaction, to have a good old fashioned Character with a capital C, well it reminds you of what it is to be human.
