It’s a job. It pays and there’s free food, if you’re careful. Most of the time I just sit there. There’s not much conversation. Being the only human in the kitchen means it’s a little dull. There are humans around. There are the “runners” ferrying the plates out to the “visitors”. I don’t get to talk to them much, they’re too busy and they don’t like me anyway. They’re hoping I mess up so they can get promoted. My job is to talk to the visitors. If they want to “complement the chef” I have to go out and smile.
