The awards had a new category this year. The sponsors wanted to be seen to be embracing “diverse talent”. The word “diverse” was still used… carefully. Obviously the sponsors couldn’t be associated with its previous meaning so they’d reimagined it. The industry needed diversity, the models showed it, the algorithms proved it. But now it was “diversity of position” : different outlooks, different views. New young talent not weighed down by traditional models. The nominees were young, fresh, working in different ways. The sponsors wanted to be associated with the new. The awards looked for talent that had been programmed differently.
